the computer screen, and you will see what your computer may say to you if you decide to become a Consultant for SEO-SEM! Of course, long hours and hard work are required if you really want to be successful at anything in this world.
The trick is to figure out what it is that you love to do, so that it won't seem like work. Since 1970, the book "What Color Is Your Parachute" has helped people find out what career best suits them.
A recent post on on The SEO Blog entitled "Searching for a Career - Eight Skills For Entry Into SEM" is an excellent overview that is done with "O'HUG" Communication (Open, Honest, Upfront, and Good - clear and comprehensive). It is also very timely as I have somewhat recently posted myself about "SEO-SEM's Emerging Growth Revolution".
In order to help you figure out what color your SEO-SEM parachute is (or if you even have one?), I sincerely believe that this 5 page Search Engine Watch Forum topic entitled "What Degrees Or Professional Backgrounds Do SEO/SEMers Have?" is very interesting, enlightening, and worth the read.
You'll even find a post in that forum topic from the author, Jim Hedger (Photo Coming Soon), of the previous "SEO Blog" post on "Searching for a Career....". I love Jim's openness, honesty, and being upfront about his educational background, which includes history and social work. I agree with Jim that years of SEO experience, and a fascination with technology make his current qualifications very strong. My point here is that formal educations are great, but if you persistently apply yourself at anything you love to do, you will learn as you go. What do you think? Were some people born to be SEO's or SEM's?
